A détournement game
Locomotive is a game prototype created following several courses on game design. After exploring different concepts, notions and theories, the objective was to carry out a narrative, formal and structural analysis of a large-scale video game.
Locomotive is a détournement game, we modified certain elements of the originial game to highlight them and/or give them a different scope. The proposal had to be prototyped on Unity.
Thus, our group of four decided to focus on Red Dead Redemption 2, a GTA-like, western oriented, produced by Rockstar.
Our objectives were to appropriate the theories of Mary Flanagan (Critical Play) and her concepts of Rewriting, Reskining and Unplaying. But also to soak up the writings of Guy Debord and Gil J. Wolman and their Manual of Diversion to produce a prototype with justified and sensible inspirations.
Pitch
In a train steaming towards the West, a lonely cowboy is confronted with his disillusionment of the West's myth. Seeking to stop the locomotive, he runs through a false reality, an adulterated reality. By going beyond the myth's foundations, he deconstructs a western vision of this era, fed by an alienated locomotive.
